After an injury, it can be difficult to determine if you should get medical attention at the hospital, a walk-in clinic or at home.
In the case of a major injury such as severe physical trauma, head injury, shortness of breath or loss of consciousness, it is recommended that you visit a hospital emergency department or call an ambulance as soon as possible.

Not all injuries that require medical attention need to be dealt with in an emergency room. Many minor injuries can be treated at a walk-in clinic. If your injury involves only moderate pain, limited motion, minimal swelling, or other mild symptoms, it is recommended that you check in with a doctor at a walk-in or urgent care clinic.
Examples of minor injuries that should be seen by a nurse or physician at a walk-in clinic:
- Shallow cuts or abrasions
- Sprains or muscle strain
- Bruises or skin lesions
- Minor burns on a small area of the skin
The attending nurse or physician will provide treatment for your minor injury and recommendations for at-home treatment to continue your recovery. They will also be able to determine if you will require additional treatment or further testing from a specialist.
At a walk-in clinic, nurses and physicians are equipped to:
- Stitch cuts
- Remove stitches
- Clean and bandage scrapes and burns
- Evaluate and treat muscle and joint strains and sprains
- Evaluate and treat insect and animal bites
- …and more.
